On December 18, 2014, the Canadian Panel on Research Ethics issued a revised version of the 2nd edition of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (commonly known as “TCPS2”) and a corresponding highlights of changes document. The revised version of the TCPS2 represents the Tri-Council’s continued commitment to promoting the ethical and useful conduct of research involving humans in Canada and incorporates feedback received from the research community and ethics professionals regarding aspects of the policy that have demonstrated the need for further clarification, improved flexibility, and heightened transparency with human participants.
Overall research in Canada should continue much as before, but investigators, sponsors, and research ethics review boards should all have more tools available to them as well as more responsibility to justify, and even publicize, their activities. Quorum Review IRB will be making revisions to its forms and policies to meet the new TCPS2 requirements.
For a more comprehensive review of the specific revisions, please download Quorum Review’s TCPS2 Crosswalk document which locates, evaluates, and briefly summarizes each revision.
