The Process Improvement Team (PIT) for Quorum Review IRB recently ventured away from our downtown Seattle office tower to volunteer at the nearby Orion Center, a safe haven for homeless youth. YouthCare—a community-based agency serving those who are young and homeless in Seattle—operates Orion Center and 12 other sites in the greater Seattle area. Orion Center’s generous offerings include a hot meal in a dining room with peers and programs that help homeless youth with transitional housing, independent living, and education.
Many of the young people visiting the Orion Center are victims of abuse or neglect at home or were failed by foster care or other overworked support systems. Some are struggling with substance dependency and mental health issues. Forty percent of homeless youth self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning, and most of this percentage had to leave their homes simply for being themselves. YouthCare’s mission is to end youth homelessness and to ensure that young people are valued for who they are and empowered to achieve their potential.
PIT members gladly prepared and served a lunch of salads, burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, and fries. The team used this volunteering opportunity to connect with both the young people served and the dedicated staff at Orion Center.
“Interacting with the teens and being able to serve their needs, even if just for an afternoon, was really rewarding and humbling,” says Kimmy Whitmer, a PIT Business Process Analyst. “I was impressed with how warm and inviting the atmosphere of the whole center was—the staff work hard to ensure everyone is listened to and taken care of.”
Quorum is proud of PIT’s efforts at assisting with Seattle’s homeless crisis, which is in the top 10 worst in the country. Seattleites are too used to seeing individuals residing on the streets or in their vehicles or tents. PIT and other Quorum teams’ Days of Service are inspired by the company mission, which makes the well-being of all people a priority.
